The European Dental Sleep Medicine Academy set up in 2005 a protocol for the use of mandibular advancement devices.
Exploration of the patient
Before prescribing an intraoral prosthesis it is indispensable to examin the mouth with the technological methods available to gather complete information about the articulation, bone structure and dentition.
- Periodontal assessment.
- Dental examination.
- Panoramic and lateral radiographic study.
- T Assessment of the tongue and soft tissues
- Type of malocclusion.
This thorough examination of the oral cavity allows us to decide, if the patient is suitable for intraoral appliance therapy. On examination it has to be placed value on the articulation and dental position and it should be taken into account peculiarities such as crowding. If teeth are out of arch, in the manufacture of the prosthesis, there will be some changes. A good arcaded line is more viable for the use of the prosthesis, but now, thanks to the wide variety of devices it is unusual to dismiss a patient for his teething. In cases of patients with missing parts, the prosthesis of choice has to have special characteristics for the edentulous space.
