It is characterized by pain and cramps in the muscles of the lower extremities (legs and feet). These particular episodes of sleep apnea disorder last several minutes and cause early morning awakenings. It is a common condition and occasionally affects 15% of the population and we must establish the differential diagnosis of restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movements.
